The fourth and so-far the last major war fought between the two neighboring countries has been the Kargil War in 1999. The reason for this war also happens to be the disputed territory of Kashmir that India has wrongly occupied and continues to hold even though the residents themselves are willing that Kashmir be amalgamated with Pakistan.
In the May – July 1999 period, Pakistan Army along with Kashmiri insurgents infiltrated across the Line of Control (LoC) into the Indian occupied territory in an attempt to free the entire region. Although initially Pakistan claimed that the ongoing rebellion in Kashmir was entirely the work of Kashmiri insurgents, later due to certain documentations and statements issued by some Pakistani officials, it was cleared that Pakistan was involved in the Kargil insurgency. These infiltrators (both Pakistanis and Kashmiris) had gained control of almost 200 sq. kms area along the LoC. However, because of a tip-off by a villager, India was able to concentrate enough forces in Kashmir to halt the Pakistani invasion. Due to the publicizing of this invasion, Pakistan was faced with mounting political, economical and international pressures to retreat its armies from Kashmir. Hence this war ended without India fleeing to the United Nations for help in the form of ceasefire. Both the armies retreated to their initial positions, leaving the disputed territory of Kashmir as a source of contention between the two countries.
Even now, India does not leave any opportunity to violate Pakistan’s territories and continues to coax Pakistan into combat. Although both countries are fully aware that if a war occurs, it will not be that of minor arms and ammunition but a nuclear war resulting in horrific losses on both sides!
Peace.
although you have written good but you havent mentioned anything regarding efforts made by pakistan in kargil war...
ReplyDeleteKargil War was more of an under-cover operation. Bold operations are nowhere recorded in history. Hence we do not have any details about Pakistani and Indian efforts in the Kargil War.
